All things considered, these are disappointing results for the nation’s best-selling compact family car.

Having finished 19th just two years ago, the Focus’s slide down the Driver Power 100 will give bosses serious cause for concern.

Despite posting great results for ride and handling, the Focus suffers in running costs, reliability and general build quality.

Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 21st)

Having made progress in 2008, Ford has dropped back again this year. It’s 12 places higher than rival Vauxhall, and its cars are rated for practicality and handling. Yet owners’ main gripe is reliability.

A Car i have always searched for in performance and wanted to own, but has had failures upon first owning and driving this car, the engine management light appeared on the dash dail, it was diagnosed as the lamba sensor (02) and had to be renewed and repaired, then 1,2,3 selection on the heating was not operating only working on the number 4 blower in which i had to pay £120 to fix, aircon and climate was not working, resitor had to be renewed and replaced, now repaired and working, but on a recent journey up the motorway from plymouth to bath, the engine management light appeared on the dash and had to drive it back to plymouth with this light on, after resting the car up the light was no longer showing, so feel these number of problems with this car has let me down in my driving experience on a nice looking car with good power and performance

It's getting a bit long in the tooth now, but I would definitely get another one if we were getting another hatchback. We need a bigger car so are getting an estate. I have the 2ltr Ghia version hb and it is a cracking car to drive, plenty of pull and fine on the motorway, nimble around town. Enough gadgets, comfy seats, not a bad boot. I was surprised when we tested it as I was very sceptical about the Focus, but as soon as put my foot down I was converted. The body work has stared to rust a little lately, around the front doors and it's starting to look a little scruffy, and we've got a problem with the engine overheating.

The new ones are supposed to be even more impressive, but I have done he Focus now, time for something bigger and better.

This is the second Focus I have owned, first was 2001Y plate mark one - that was a fantastic car in all respects (best I've owned). Thought I was making the right decision moving to next generation Focus - how wrong I was! Although there is more room inside and in the boot there is no comparison in driving experience and build quality/finish.
Both of my vehicles have been serviced at the scheduled intervals - reliability was never an issue on my old model, to date on newer model I've had the cylinder head replaced after 30k and power steering pump replaced at 40k (last month)!
You see 2001Y plate Focuses still around looking superb - the paint & finish doesn't bear comparison.

Suitable size for my needs with good visibility. Controls etc are easy & straightforward to use. More spaces could have been provided inside the car to hold things. Also, the handbrake is offset towards the passenger's seat (for left hand drive cars & not changed for right hand drive?) One 'design fault' would be the way the tailgate, if opened quickly when wet, will allow water to fall into the boot instead of draining away down the pillars. A wet tailgate therefore has to be opened slowly! Otherwise, it is a comfortable car with good boot space and leg room front & rear. The rear seats fold down & back easily when needed.

I had an old BMW (12 years old) which had never gone wrong so it was a bit of an eye opener when the steering rack failed just after we purchased it. A year later the alternator failed and was very difficult to replace due to garages lack of knowledge. One persistant problem is that the tailgate leaks and im told that it's a common problem (readers comments please!!). The steering rack was fixed under warranty but the alternator well, it was expensive and the lack of knowledge regarding fitting thedrive belt from idependent garages left me relying on the main dealer whom to be fair came up trumps

Focus ST (mk2). Amazing car for the money, build quality also excellent for the money. Is so well behaved and easy to drive slowly, and exhilerating when pushed. Frustrated with Ford's after sales / warranty - took 4 months to fix a clutch hydraulics problem - back and forth and on and on... all covered though. Very thirsty motor, more than I'd expected, but all is forgiven as it's such a joy to drive. Would definitely buy another.

there is a serious problem with the focus alternator/loom electrics.,which no mag i know has picked up on.ford say there is no problem but a freind of mine who works for the AA ,does about 3-5 a day.not just fords but volvos.transit connects, jags, freelanders[all have shared parts].that includes brand new 59 plate cars.there are various forums online highlighting this problem..this is my 5th ford and probably my last.

Not as reliable as expected and costs far more to run than Ford would have you believe. It is the first of the 'New Focus's on the road, I had to wait month's for delivery. It is useless in the snow. Had 2 accidents in snow, 2008 slid into a curb, needed new nearside front wheel and suspension. In December 2009 slid in snow on a roundabout, needed new nearside rear wheel and suspension.

Pretty bulletproof really. Things that have gone wrong have generally been minor - and not so much the car's fault, as just a fact of driving in the UK (eg the suspension breaking almost completely, thanks to the awful state of our roads). First new car purchase, and would definitely buy another one - if there's a 4-door model with enough space for a new baby's bags of stuff...

The last of the original shape Focus: well built and reliable. Needed the ECU software updated - a popular thing on TDCi Fords. Dealer called it an 'adjustment' and said it wasn't covered by 3-year warranty. Rear washer pipe wasn't fitted properly and leaked onto the parcel shelf - another 'adjustment', apparently!

As with the 3 previous Focus' I have owned, I find it difficult to fault the model and even having driven many other cars, i would recommend the ford brand, especially the focus to anyone. It has the right elements in a car for me. It looks, good, drives well and never looks out of place in the company car park.

Solid reliable car that it a pleasure to drive smoothly with the family on board using all six gears or working the gears harder when its just me. No mechanical problems so far after nearly a years ownership and the parts when required I know are cheaper than most manufacturers. Its an estate with attitude!

The Focus is a decent package but is flawed by an underpowered uneconomical engine range. However, it is still one of the best suspension set ups which is pleasing to drive. I have had a number of relatively small faults with the car which has led me to look at another manufacturer for it's replacement.

The Focus has been every bit as good as I had expected after choosing it from the many cars I had read reviews for before the purchase. The only visits to a garage has been for routine servicing and replacement of tyres. It passed its first MOT test last December needing nothing done.

I have been very impressed with my car since purchase. I regularly travel to France in it. It is the most reliable car I have driven. My only complaint is how hard it is to change headlight bulbs - impossible!
spare parts are reasonable. My local Ford dealer, Benfield is excellent.

Very good to drive, but the build quality is far behind VW's and Audi's.Ford should really improve that in the near future.Excellent everyday car, seats a bit too narrow for tall persons and not very comfortable on longest journeys if You are 1.96 cm tall and above.

It is a good driver's car. But the computer chip developed a fault (ESP) and could not be reprogrammed. The car was a month out of warranty. I was charged 1200 pounds (sic) reduced to 500 pounds after protest. And it took a long time. So a big disappointment.

Ford should do something about the faulty speed sender unit they are known to cause problems they sell hundreds a week yet they still refuse to recall the cars. Overall the car is a great family car, and has been a joy to own over then the speedo issue.

It is reliable and easy to drive. It has been involved a couple of bumps and scrapes over the years and come out with minimal damage where other cars have crumpled.

On the whole not bad. Within 3 months of having the car the turbo blew. It's been through 4 wheel bearings on the rear and the front bulbs blow regularly.

The drivers side electric window motor doesn't work which I believe is a common problem.
