It may have niche appeal, but the old Forester has a solid fan base that loves its reliability, ruggedness and practicality. Simple to run and own, it scores in all the areas you’d expect.

Performance and comfort are modest, but there’s one major drawback: that boxer engine means big bills at the pumps, resulting in high running costs.
