Plus, the little Hyundai has been heralded as our sister site Carbuyer.co.uk’s 2014 Car of the Year. So, just £69 per month seems brilliant value for a Premium model, with alloys, air-con and LED daytime running lights.

Honda Civic

Honda Civic 1.8 i-VTEC SE Plus: £149 per month

If you’ve got a big deposit to put down, the latest Honda Civic looks tremendous value for money, with a 1.8-litre SE model costing £149 per month over three years. Although it doesn’t quite trouble the class leaders, the Civic offers great technical quality for your cash, and features a lot of practical space, too – its 487-litre boot is a massive 100 litres bigger than the VW Golf’s.

Other key selling points include its interior, which is almost as upmarket as the Golf’s, too. The Civic also serves up a comfortable ride, while the sleek styling marks it out ahead of more mainstream rivals. Standard equipment is generous across the range; the SE Plus features dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and cruise control. And the low interest rate means that you won’t pay over the list price.

The Fiat Panda remains a quirky, fun city car that’s good to drive. It’s practical, with the boxy shape making it roomy. And to boost its appeal against a raft of new rivals, it’s also a bargain. Pay less than £9,000 overall, due to the £1,000 saving, and the £1,000 dealer deposit contribution means a tiny down payment on an Easy model.

Renault’s stylish small crossover offers great looks, lots of interior space and, as it’s based on the Clio, an engaging driving experience. The raised ride height makes it more comfortable than the standard supermini, too. The price is appealing, with a steep 8.2 per cent APR interest rate balanced by a £1,000 deposit contribution.

The Pulsar marks Nissan’s long-awaited return to the traditional family car market, and while it’s not the most exciting family hatchback, it’s very spacious and comfortable. SEAT Leon

SEAT Leon SE 1.2 TSI 110ps: £185 per month

Our Car of the Year in 2013, the latest SEAT Leon continues to drive sales upwards for SEAT, which is aggressively pricing the hatch and giving away its Technology Pack – worth £1,980 – for free. This brings full LED headlights, sat-nav and a DAB radio. The Leon’s interior is smart with dark grey plastic and chrome trim, while wide-opening rear doors and a generous boot make the car a great family option. Excessive deposit aside, a 1.2 TSI SE looks a good deal at £185 a month. Overall, the Leon is great to drive and is arguably the most stylish family hatch on sale.

It also comes with the added lure of Hyundai’s five-year warranty and zero per cent finance offer.

MG6

MG6 GT SE D: £199 per month

MG has returned to the UK with a whimper rather than a bang, largely because of a range that falls short in certain key areas. The MG6 is decent to drive and packed with kit, but a poor engine range and interior quality issues let it down. Still, it’s great value for money and you get a lot of car for your cash.

Ford B-MAX

Ford B-MAX Titanium 1.0T EcoBoost 100PS: £203 per month

This Fiesta-based supermini-MPV gives passengers unrivalled interior space and easy access, courtesy of its clever design, which ditches the B-pillar and introduces a sliding rear door.

Despite its impressive practicality, the B-MAX is good fun to drive, and the 98bhp 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine feels especially punchy and refined, promising up to 55.4mpg economy, as well as CO2 emissions of just 119g/km. This deal includes Ford’s Convenience Pack which adds keyless entry and a starter button to the Titanium spec. Ford is also offering £750 off the deposit and £500 off its list price.

Volvo V40

Volvo V40 T2 R-Design: £249 per month

Volvo’s V40 is priced to bridge the gap between ‘standard’ and ‘premium’ family hatch, and a T2 R-Design is yours for less than £250 a month. This spec adds a sporty touch to the V40’s safety-heavy image. But while the 1.6-litre turbo petrol T2 is punchy enough, it can’t come close to the D2 diesel’s 83.1mpg economy.

MINI Paceman

MINI Paceman Cooper: £206 per month

The MINI Paceman is certainly different from its rivals, and better than the sum of its small SUV-meets-coupé parts. It’s the most entertaining crossover SUV to drive. High running costs may be a drawback, even with MINI’s £3,300 deposit contribution and low 1.9 per cent APR, although it’s still the most ‘premium’ choice in the class.

Vauxhall Adam

Vauxhall Adam 1.4 Glam: £234 per month

The Adam is not quite the MINI beater Vauxhall hoped it would be, but it’s a stylish city car that is available with plenty of customisable options. The best deal on offer officially is zero per cent finance over five years, but as with any Vauxhall model, staff in the showroom will be open to haggling, as our aim to pay price proves.

Here’s proof that off-roaders don’t have to be dull to drive. With its sharp handling and eager diesel, the Kuga feels as agile as most compact hatchbacks. Factor in rakish looks and a roomy, high-spec cabin, and its appeal is clear. Ford’s competitive Options finance deal, with a £1,500 deposit contribution, is the icing on the cake.

VW Passat S 1.6 TDI: £249 per month

The all-new, eighth-generation Passat is now better to drive with a lighter body and a lower centre of gravity, adding to a dynamic feel on the road, plus it’s more refined and roomier than before. A smarter interior – complete with brushed chrome inserts – moves the Passat up to another level.

New tech includes automatic post-collision braking, which is standard, and there’s a raft of other active safety features available on SE models and above. Even S spec is fairly well equipped, with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, as well as a DAB radio and Bluetooth. Still need convincing further? VW is contributing £1,500 towards your deposit.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

It promises an eye-popping 148mpg with only 44g/km of CO2 emissions. And while its boot is compromised on space, the plug-in SUV is roomy, quiet and pleasant to drive.

Citroen C5

Citroen C5 HDi 115 VTR Tourer: £275 per month

Citroen’s C5 is looking its age these days, especially alongside the premium DS models, but it’s a comfortable cruiser over long distances and, in Tourer estate guise, a practical buy. Poor resale values mean Citroen finds it tricky to keep payments low, so despite the tempting APR, push for the much lower aim to pay price.

VW Tiguan

VW Tiguan S 1.4 TSI BlueMotion Tech 2wd: £265 per month

It’s not the most exciting SUV, but the Tiguan is a tempting choice with its strong build quality, relaxing comfort and decent practicality. Range-topping versions get VW’s grippy 4motion all-wheel-drive transmission, although the front-drive 1.4-litre TSI will be the best bet for most owners, while S trim has all the essential kit.

Mercedes A-Class

Mercedes A-Class A200 CDI Sport: £289 per month

With its high-quality image, the A-Class isn’t subject to the bargain deals of some hatches. But it’s a great looking, tech-heavy choice that still offers relatively good value. The headline figure is £269 a month for the A180 SE, but pay £20 a month more and you can get this superior A200 CDI Sport with a £499 deposit contribution.

BMW 4 Series

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 420i Sport: £349 per month

The Gran Coupe combines rakish looks with improved practicality, as its bigger hatchback boot and four doors convert the standard 4 Series into a stylish family car with enough room to comfortably carry four people and their luggage. Inside, you get the same upmarket feel, with a sleek and logical layout, along with BMW’s excellent touchpad-controlled iDrive infotainment screen.

With its low centre of gravity and wide rear track, the 4 Series is one of the most engaging cars in the range. And while this deal buys the most basic 420i petrol model, it’s still capable of covering 0-62mph in a mere 7.3 seconds.

Audi Q3 2.0 TDI 150 quattro S line Plus: £349 per month

When Audi’s sharp styling and refined engines come neatly packaged in a compact SUV body, you’re bound to have a winning formula. And the Q3 – the smallest car in the brand’s off-road family – doesn’t disappoint. We found this deal on the top-of-the-range S line Plus, so while the price may look higher than rivals’, you get plenty for your money.

This sporty 4WD model includes 19-inch wheels, Alcantara seats and privacy glass as standard, as well as electric door mirrors, LED headlights and a powered tailgate. The compact SUV market also demands practicality, and the Q3 matches rivals with a 420-litre boot. The 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel is the most economical choice, promising an average 56.5mpg when hooked up to the 4WD system.
