BMW 1M Coupe video review

The M Coupe is the fastest 1-Series ever and at £13,000 less than an M3, it's also the cheapest car in BMW's performance division.

The new BMW 1-Series M Coupe lives up to its legendary M heritage by boasting aggresive looks, stunning performance and leaving our reviewer with a permanent grin.

It will also leave the lucky 450 buyers flashing their veneers, as at £40,020 it's the cheapest way to own one of the M-division's much-heralded performance specials.

As with all Ms, the engine takes centre stage but, suprisingly, BMW engineers decided against a bespoke unit and instead fettled the twin turbo, 3.0-litre straight-six from the flagship Z4.

As a result, power is up to 335bhp but it’s the torque that really matters. With 450Nm available from just 1,500rpm and a peak of 500Nm – there is more in-gear grunt than even the M3’s mighty V8.

Despite some extra muscle added to the body and subtle tweaks to the interior, the poised handling is what really reveals this motor's performance streak.

But if you're still not persuaded that a 1-Series deserves the prestigious M badge, than just listen to the reaction we had the first time we floored the throttle!
