BMW 1 Series Running Costs
Overall Average Rating: 86.04%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 39th
The baby BMW is a winner on paper, with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, as well as cabrio, two, three and five-door options.
But while it racks up some decent figures for reliability, build quality and running costs – which were good for a premium-badged car – it was let down by a hard ride and supermini practicality.
Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 8th)
It trails Lexus, but BMW will be delighted to see that it’s still ahead of Mercedes and Audi… just. The brand has fallen two places overall this year, and will look to reverse that trend in 2010.

Excellent car (116d) overall, definatelly delivers on the purpose it was purchased for; fuel economy and decent performance. Overtaking on country roads is not the best,. but in the 0-60 mph speed spectrum it takes over faster than an average 1.6lt petrol car. At speeds over 60 mph the limiting 116hp factor begins to come into play. However, fuel economy is very good, as the average consumption indicated on the onboard computer shows 53.3mpg, which is pretty close to my own fuel economy spreadsheed register (after every topup I record miles driven, litres pumped and price paid, to calculate mpg and other figures) which currenlty shows 49.8mpg after having driven 7,200 miles in the last 7 months.

A good solid build with never a rattle or squeak anywhere, bought when a year old with 5000 miles covered. Well polished when I picked it up from Halliwell jones bmw and £6000 cheaper than buying a new one. I found the sales and service team much better than my previous experiences at vw garages. Only needs servicing at 19000 mile intervals or two years. I haven't had a car this good since my mk2 golf gti back in the mid eighties.

I rate the car but economy is 30% less than the published figures & I don't drive hard or particularly short distances. There has been one recall relating to the exhaust emissions sensor and a recurring fayult with the 'Staop start' sytem which the dealer says cannot be fixed but relates to the battery. the stop tart system comes on automatically when staionary and is really annoying.

It's proven to be exactly what we expected. It's economical, the performance is as expected although a bit more poke would be nice and the sports pack make the seats & suspension firmer so can make your bum numb after a few hours at the wheel. The standard accessories are excellent as is the comfort pack (tho' a tad expensive!)
Overall an excellent car & BMW have been very helpful

BMW 123d M Sport a 201 bhp engine in a 1 Series Hatch Body with all that torque and road holding on a good day Beautifull and adgile to drive so what can be wrong, No grip from the rear wheel drive on a slipery surface. Once out of warrenty any repairs would too expensive. I'm only getting 43mpg not the 56 mpg BMW say I should get

The 1 Series proved to be economical, refined, a pleasure to drive and the running costs were exceptionally low. It far exceeded my expectations and I would heartily recommend it to anyone. All worries about it being too small proved not to be the case and it was perfectly practical for a family of four.

Lovely to drive. Nice and economical too. Would have preferred the bigger engine but budget is everything. I know that the Golf is suppoed to be better but for what I need a car for I prefer the BMW (though I readily admit the Golf is good).

Excellent car, fun to drive , great for 1-2 people. Good fuel economy and great performance. Engine is smooth.
Not so good for a family and boot space whilst ok can't fit in all the kids stuff you apparently need.
Run flat tyres expensive

Have never owned a BMW before this but when BMW brought out the 1 series coupe I fell in love with it- don't really like the 1 series saloon.
Handles like a dream, accelerates realy well & dead economical to run.

I have the BMW 123d SE coupe and it is utterly brilliant. There is no other car on the UK market (other than the the 123d hatchback) that will accelerate 0-62 mph in 7 seconds AND have an overall mpg of 54.1.

Great fun to drive with good handling. Fairly practical for a family of four with the cabin not being overly spacious. Decent boot space. Build quality good, economy not great. Like the car a lot.

Very good economical car. A pity about the run flat tyres, don't like them. Wear very quickly and expensive to change if you have a puncture. The car is a little cramped on the inside.
