Amazing car. Despite having the msport with 19" msport alloys I think the ride comfort isn't at all as bad as car magazines has been reporting. The design, power and chassi is way ahead of any other car in the same category based on the models existed in 2005. The combined massive boot and folding rear seat means its as spacious as any other large saloon. Only the running costs are very high compared to a small efficient and ecomonical hatchback, however, I expected that and I don't drive much, hence, it doesn't matter to me really.

The 5 series is solid, gets top marks from reviews. However, SE front seats aren't great as they do not offer enough lower back support (my car does not have the optional sports seats) and the run flat tyres are figgety once around 3mm of tread. Engine kick down sometimes a little slow and response slow too. However, that said, huge boot space and comfort for the children is excellent.

good bmw 5 series. the engine is underpowered and the technology wasn't quite ready for when the car was made. ie the sat nav is non upgradable and when there is a fault with the electrics it takes bmw a long time to identify the problem. Running costs expensive for tyres/fuel and parts but practicallity, msport styling and interior comfort and handling very good.

Quality is reasonable but not up to expected standards. This current model is not nearly so user friendly as the previous 5 series which I loved. I hope BMW have re-thought layout, design, controls and build quality for the new forthcoming 5 series due this year. The run flat tyres ruin the ride and handling and should be scrapped.

Own a BMW 525d. Fantastic car for the price I paid for a 5 year old car. Great ride and acceleration for a diesel. Wish the headlights were more bright and the wipers were for UK instead of the LHD. All in all a great car with ageless design (E39). The 2010 model looks similar in shape (well even better)... have an eye on it!

Good comfortable car with reasonable day to day running costs. Expensive to buy and service, but reliable so far apart from some niggling system, failures. However, nothing that stops me using the car
I have no major complaints as it does exa\ctly what I expected and provides me with the driving experience I wanted/expected.

Good overall car, with above average reliabilty considering mileage 140,000.Good fuel economy on long journeys up to 460 miles on a tank of fuel. Not quite as practical as i would have liked, with no split fold rear seats which makes carrying long objects difficult.Tyres and spare parts reasonale prices.

The vehicle has an excellent road manner and even in snow you know what the vehicle is going to do. The only downside has been the self levelling suspension compressor playing up in cold conditions. The car is quite and ultra refine with a good sized practical boot. Would replace like with like

Well built car, could be more practical with folding rear seats.Economy good for size of engine.Servicing reasonable from BMW independant garage. The car has been pretty reliable with just a couple of electrical gremlins ie Crankshaft sensor, boot soloniod, airbag warning light.

Best car I have ever had
fast enough, economical, good handling, extremely comfortable
only thing I don't like is the runflat tyres which are a big mistake - have had problems with supply and they give a harsh ride and depending on the brand - noisy too

Nice enough all rounder, but lacks any personality other than a "solid" ride. Still not convinced by run-flat tyres.
Expectation was high on buying the car, but would have had more fun in a Seat Leon TDI.

Manual gearbox is poor on this car (520d).
When pulling away from a T junction, engaging 2nd gear can sometimes virtually stop the car unless you slip the clutch.
