A very sturdy, reliable and comforatble car. The initial problem with the engine which was replaced (528s) has solved all problems ass with the ownership of such a fine car. Running costs remain high but affordable. Local dealers and garages esp franchised ones are prohibitvely expensive, but being low mileage do not have to return to them much.. Do not trust independent garages with the work due to bad experience in the past when ended up spending double the amount fora botched up job corrected by BMW dealership. Have stuck to BMW dealers since.

2011-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Some trim rattles still unresolved and door kickplates have come loose. but more importantly the car keeps wanting to veer to the left and the dealer can't seem to fix this despite acknowledging that there is a "small" (lol!!) problem. About town mileage is only ok at no more than 30mpg, heavy traffic mpg is poor at 25mpg and motorway mpg is poor at 2000rpm in eigth gear at approx 75-80mph with 38mpg showing. friends with a slightly newer model of the same car with stop-start and bmw 'eco-pro' seem to get much better petrol mileage.

We've driven BMWs now for over 15 years and apart from my husband buying a Skoda OCtavia VRS last year (because he'd convinced himself they were good because the police used them) I've driven nothing else. The Skoda lasted less than a year - he rapidly changed it as we both realised it was penny wise, pound foolish and BMWs are worth paying the extra for. Although I only bought my 520d SE touring this year, my previous 530d SE Touring I'd ordered from new in 2001 and done only 60k miles.

Cost: 5/5
2000-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The battery failed just after I purchased the car - not really a fault of the car - and last year I had a leak on a hose when we were over in france, but we were able to continue our holiday - so not a disaster! I have been pleasantly surprised at the cost of most spares, servicing is very reasonable, the worst aspect is the fuel cost. it is a heavy car and it is an auto, which doesnt help the economy. it fares much better on a long run wher I can achieve 35mpg.

Cost: 2/5
2006-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

The car is bomb proof. it is regularly serviced by my garage - douglas park in glasgow and the car is just awesome - it just eats the miles rain, snow or shine. it is by far the best car in all ways I have owned...I will be buying another. the car is turbine smooth, relentlessly effective. The 535d m sport is not cheap to run and maintain - but given what it is and what it can do, in my opinion, it has no equal in it's class.

Cost: 3/5
56-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Disappointing. Brilliant performance, but niggling problems with battery charge and the expensive hands-free phone charging. I-drive is ridiculously fiddly, when a button push would be much simpler. Run-flat tyres give a poor ride for such an expensive car. Boot is poorly designed, with suspension struts ensuring that space cannot be used effectively. Difficult to load golf clubs horizontally, for example.

My car is a comfortable cruiser whan can seat 5 comfortably and fit in there luggage, its an estate. It's an Alpina so can keep up with Porsches and the like but incredibly isnt too uneconomical. It isnt over styled and is discreet yet has precense. If I could find something again like this I would but it has 130K already and I fancy not letting go of her for a bit longer.

It's a brilliant BMW 535i SE auto with over 190k miles on the clock and still has the original exhaust right through. I converted it to run on LPG in 2003 and it still runs beautifully. It is the first BMW that I have had (I always considered them as a cheap German Ford before I was offered and drove this one) and I would certainly buy another!

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

A sheep in wolf's clothing (I did type that correctly). it lacks power, is utterly useless in 2 inches of snow, but it looks great. Even on long motorway drives in economy mode it never goes beyond 42.0 mpg, I wish all car makers could simply provide real mpg expectation, and not simply a theoretical mpg that can effectively never be attained.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Some of the electronic systems do not work properly and never have since new!!!! adaptive cruise control has had a complete new control module. new discs fitted as they warped. Really only been fuel and tax and insurance at the moment as the other work has been under warranty but if it had not of been it would have been very expensive.

Cost: 3/5
2007-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

1, dmf & clutch replaced at 35,000 miles. 2. steering lock failed in 'locked' position & had to be towed to dealer & computer re-programmed. loose wire caused n/s rear lights to intermitantly malfunction. Quite happy with fuel consumption & maintenance costs, as I use a bmw specialist garage that is 50% cheaper than a main bmw dealer.

Cost: 4/5
1998-reg Petrol, Owner for more than 5 years

I have done 218000 miles: only once broke down due to a silted up radiator. The consumption is the biggest cost at 26.9mpg, but considering there is no depreciation anymore, that a well maintained car typically only needs service items -so replace before they wear out beyond repair- the car has been absolutely faultless.

Cost: 3/5
2008-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Other than a reversing light switch (ł6), and regular servicing/wear and tear items, this car has required absolutely no repairs in 90000 miles. Servicing is fairly expensive, but road tax cheap and insurance not too bad. fuel costs are low, as the engine is efficient, and repair bills have been virtually zero.

Last of the pre-Bangle BMW's. A superb saloon, but not very flexible in interior space.
The Govt.'s punitive Tax on cars in this emission range is UNFAIR and I shall vote accordingly. [I do only a small mileage therefore am not polluting the atmosphere that would demand such a penalty].

Cost: 2/5
2001-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Has only let me down twice with a flat battery, which has now been replaced, common fault apparently.all these common faults only become apparent once you own the car !!!!!! Tyres can be expensive if you want good ones, never had to top up oil between services, just add petrol and drive.

Cost: 3/5

I think that the E39 5 series has been the best car I have owned, even though it is as old as it is, the class of the vehicle shines through. I previously owned a E46 330ci and loved it, but overall and certainly in terms of value for money, this is the business!

Cost: 3/5
2007-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Reliability is too poor for a bmw - early injector failures, fuel pump, later injector/coil failures - not all covered by bmw even though they are known issues. Mpg is quoted as 38. we get about 28-29 normally. long distance motorway drive can be 39mpg.

Cost: 3/5
-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I bought the car - an estate- for a nuimber of reasons, partly because I wanted to be able to carry 2 bicycles without using racks. I also wanted a prestige car. I am delighted with the car and intend to keep it for ages!

Cost: 5/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The car has never missed a beat, serviced regularly and gives excellent mpg for a 3 litre engine. Good mpg, low band car tax despite such a large engine. 5 years free servicing for ł350 at purchase was a bargain.

Cost: 5/5
55-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I am very happy with the car and despite it having already done over 80K miles it feels like it will easily do that again. Only economy of 15% below the quoted figures and very expensive run-flat tyres disappoint.

Cost: 4/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No problems. On motorways consumption is extremely good. at a constant 63mph for 6 hours I got 63mpg. sadly, I mainly use it around town and get 32mpg, which makes it much more expensive to run than I would like.

Cost: 1/5
2007-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I have not had any issues since I purchased my car. the only issue has been mpg. I thought it would be better than 32mpg. Servicing is very reasonable at franchised bmw dealer. mpg is only issue but manageable.

Cost: 4/5
