BMW 6 Series and M6 facelift arrive at Detroit Motor Show

BMW has given its 6 Series range a mid-life makeover, debuting in Detroit

BMW has unveiled a range of small updates for the 6 Series and M6 at the Detroit Motor Show. As well as lightly refreshed styling, there's more luxurious cabin materials and the engine range gets added efficiency.

The 6 Series range, comprising of the coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe four-door saloon, gets some distinctly subtle styling tweaks to bring it into line with rivals such as the Audi A7. A reprofiled front bumper with a slightly altered kidney grille features, as well as new headlights with LED main beams. A revised rear bumper and new alloy wheel designs are also added.

Inside, the changes are a little more extensive, with efforts made to improve quality and ambience. Higher quality surface materials all round now feature as well as new two-tone leather options available. A more advanced head-up display is now an option.

Under the skin, efforts have been made to improve both fuel consumption and performance. All engines are now EU6 compliant, with tweaks to the 444bhp 650i turbocharged 4.4 litre V8 petrol now reducing the 0-62mph time by 0.3 seconds to 4.6 seconds for all bodystyles. Fuel economy is marginally improved at 32.9mpg (31.7mpg for the convertible).

All petrol engines also now get a sports exhaust with a switchable flap for more noise or quieter in-town running. Specs and performance for the 552bhp M6 variants remain the same, but there are small tweaks to the suspension and steering for more agility.

The bestselling diesel, the 640d, now produces 309bhp and 629Nm of torque for 0-62mph times between 5.3 and 5.5 seconds. But there's also a 2mpg improvement to 54.3mpg, with CO2 emissions down to 146g/km. All 6 Series cars now also get an Eco Pro mode, which offers start/stop and an engine coasting mode to improve efficiency.

The facelifted BMW 6 Series range will go on sale in the UK shortly after its debut at the Detroit Motor Show.
