I have kept my old style X5 because it is the perfect size for the job and has proved so reliable and cheap to run.

I had it converted to LPG after only 1500 miles and it has been exceptionally cheap to run ever since : The fuel cost has been the petrol and Diesel equivalent of 35mpg with lower emissions.

But depreciation has been absolutely crippling : £46,000 down to a current value of less than £10,000

The new X5 is far too big and expensive. The X3 is too small and just plain ugly.

Nobody else makes a 4 x 4 that is good at what it does.

it's the best car I've owned. Looks, practicality, safety, space, comfort, performance (for type of car), driving experience all very good or excellent. Economy not great, but wasn't expecting it to be. Given my mileage it was nto a major concern. The additional cost of a diesel for initial purchase and petrol price compared to annual mileage meant the diesel was actually not as cost effective.

Unlike what you hear, I found the X5 very competent on roads and relatively quick for such a heavy car. In snow, the summer tyres are no good - but so what? Get winter tyres if that's how badly you need the car over winter. Impressive servicing facility at the dealership - always there to help.

Great car for size and practicality. Performance is good for car of this size. Overall its very good but you have to be aware of the size of it for parking and that its never going to be cheap to run (though not too bad).

I wanted a car that would carry my family ( & dog ) safely, could be used as everyday transport & also for days out & holidays but was also sporty & rewarding to drive. The X5 has so far delivered all of these things.
