Jackets provide light relief

New jackets which shine custom designs at night will boost safety for drivers stuck on the hard shoulder, road workers, cyclists and pedestrians

Panels of tiny LEDs sewn into the coat can display highly visible symbols and messagesto alert passing traffic.

And the battery-powered light show can be changed with a simple text message to display warnings such as "Help - Out of Fuel" or "Assistance Arriving".

The jacket technology was invented by electronics giant Philips, but there's one niggling problem - it can't be put through a washing machine!
