This is a particularly crucial category for any car buyer, because build quality is one thing that is very difficult do judge in the showroom.

A model might seem to be built to last when it’s factory fresh, but what you need to know is how long the doors shut with a satisfying clunk... and whether the switchgear will always work with such precision.

While this chart has traditionally been dominated by Japanese models, a new build quality champion has been crowned. The talents of Skoda’s Yeti know no limits, and its victory here shows that it offers engineering quality to go with its superb design.

Honda’s old shape Jazz is putting in a fine performance for used models in second place, while it’s a wooden spoon for Fiat's old Grande Punto, which finishes last.
