When Auto Express first tested the Yaris D-4D diesel, we were staggered by its economy. Petrol variants are nearly as efficient, which helps explain your glowing praise for its running costs – first is a great achievement. Almost as impressive is the reliability score of sixth place. Unfortunately, ropey ratings for performance, comfort, ride, handling and practicality have stopped the Yaris from climbing higher. Toyota's chunky new model should improve on these weaknesses next year.
Running costs
Here’s a top tip for low-cost motoring – buy a used Yaris. The supermini is powered by some of the most efficient engines around. Opt for the diesel, and you will be dazzled by its ability to tackle long motorway trips on a shoestring. Excellent reliability also helps the Toyota to avoid high maintenance bills, while servicing is simple. The new larger Yaris will have a tough time matching its predecessor – we’ll find out how cost effective it is in Driver Power 2008.

Basically a reliable car, but it lets itself down over internal finish.”
