The new 80bhp version of its Clio 1.5 dCi will officially become the most economical car on sale in the UK when it arrives in March. Its combined fuel consumption figure of 67.3mpg is only beaten by the petrol/electric-engined hybrids, while its all-important CO2 emissions of 110g/km are the lowest of any model, bar none. Yet the car can achieve 110mph flat out, and covers 0-60mph in a respectable 12.2 seconds.
If that doesn't whet your appetite, there's more. It's a really good drive, too. The steering is precise and smooth at motorway speeds, while the Clio's performance on twisty, rural roads is agile and sporty. With 15 per cent more torque than the 1.9 dTi which it replaces, the engine is responsive and eager to please. The ride and handling impress, too, with our only criticism being the faint turbo whine.
From a wide range of trims, we sampled the new Initiale, which provides a combination of luxury and technology that's perfect for the tax-conscious company-car driver who's looking to downsize, but keep comfortable. With leather and alcantara seats, climate control, twin front and side airbags, cruise control, variable power steering, rain-sensitive wipers and automatic headlamps, it has more toys than Santa. And all the money you save on fuel can be put to good use, shopping for next year's presents...
Are you a cost-conscious, everyday motorist or a company-car user looking to downsize? Either way, 67.3mpg and the lowest emissions of anything on the road plus a host of standard features mean this amazing Clio makes a lot of sense.
