Jaguar XKR 100

What better way could there be to celebrate the 100th birthday of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons than to create a limited edition of the firm's GT sports car? So please welcome the XKR 100. This smouldering vision is launched alongside a similarly specified XJR 100 saloon. As with its four-door cousin, the two-seater will be available in a limited production run of 500, split between the soft-top convertible and coupe version, which is driven here for the first time.

This smouldering vision is launched alongside a similarly specified XJR 100 saloon. As with its four-door cousin, the two-seater will be available in a limited production run of 500, split between the soft-top convertible and coupe version, which is driven here for the first time.

Already a masterpiece of design in 'standard' R form, the centenary edition builds on the car's muscular, elegant lines with Anthracite paintwork, more pronounced bonnet louvres and a set of 20-inch alloys. Behind the wheels sits a specially developed chassis set-up that combines Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) with a new R Performance Handling Pack designed to sharpen responses. On the road, these modifications translate into a fantastic ride and handling balance that falls between the 'regular' R model and the mad XKR-R project car which we drove in issue 636.

On pitted town roads, the ride can feel a little jittery. Head for the countryside, though, and the phenomenal grip, supple chassis and impeccable stability boost driver confidence to new heights as the re-tuned steering offers great feedback. Sadly, though, none of this comes cheap. At
