This Bullitt/Mustang connection has been used by Ford before, of course. In 1997 the firm launched the Puma coupe, with a TV advert showing McQueen apparently driving the new car through the streets of San Francisco where the movie chase took place.
Through all this time, the Mustang - the original cheap-horsepower 'pony' car - has remained on sale in North America. More than 6.9million have been sold since its debut in 1964, and now the blue oval has bitten the Bullitt and launched a limited edition commemorating the film.
