Corvette Z06

Imagine lying on a psychiatrist's couch. During a word association game, 'Corvette' is mentioned. If you reply 'underpowered', you're likely to be put in a straight jacket for your own protection. However, while the current car's 345bhp is plenty by most drivers' standards, it seems Corvette fans want more. And Chevrolet is only too happy to oblige.

The new ZO6 variant is the latest evolution of the cult classic, and this one can trace its roots back to 1963's racing Stingray ZO6. It has been designed with the intention of letting owners head to the track at weekends and do their best to induce premature tyre wear...

Based on the 2001 model-year Corvette, due to arrive here soon, the ZO6 is set to take on the likes of Porsche's all-conquering 911 GT3. And while bold claims are made of the car boasting an all-new engine, tagged LS6, it's actually a heavilyreworked version of the previous LS1 unit, incorporating changes to the cylinder heads, crankcases, air intakes and camshafts.

The 5.7-litre V8 packs a 385bhp punch which, combined with 522Nm of torque, makes the heavyweight fly from 0-60mph in only four seconds. The weight is reduced thanks to a unique titanium exhaust, light rolling stock, thin windscreen glass and a small battery.

A new six-speed, close-ratio gear-box really helps to make the most of the V8's immense torque, even if it's at the expense of the top speed; this model reaches 171mph as opposed to the standard version's 175mph. But it's worth it for the thundering noise alone. The car's powerful ABS brakes scrub the speed off quickly, while the power-steering feels both sharp and accurate, allowing for precise placement in bends.

And that's where the ZO6 is at its best, the 17 and 18-inch wheels and tyres gripping the tarmac tenaciously. Should you overstep the mark, the car's 'Second-Generation Active Handling' provides a reassuring degree of back-up. Like some kind of invisible safety net, it can be left fully operational as a stability control, or switched to 'Competitive' mode, where it cancels the traction control for maximum thrills.

Powerful, noisy and fun, the ZO6 may be unlikely to topple the likes of the GT3 or Ferrari's 360 Modena, but the best 'Vette yet? You bet!

The Corvette is a legend in its own lifetime. As America's favourite sports car, its long heritage ensures a loyal following there. But in the UK it struggles to make the grade as a genuinely top-notch piece of machinery. Still, with the ZO6, that goal is closer than ever before- and the car is quite a performance bargain at the price, too.
