Press the starter button, and the V8 buzzes into life like a race engine. The unit produces 414bhp without a turbo and, revving to 8,250rpm, helps the RS4 accelerate like a supercar, putting down its power via a smooth six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive.
The 0-62mph dash takes 4.9 seconds – a tenth of a second behind the saloon – with a top speed of 155mph in reserve. Part of the RS4’s appeal is that it’s not difficult to drive. The steering is beautifully weighted and, once you’ve got used to the sharp throttle response, it’s no trickier to pilot than a diesel A4. Press the S button and the electronics make the engine even more responsive and the exhaust louder.
