Size isn’t everything if you’re buying a new Renault. The French company is downsizing, and its new 1.2-litre Turbo Control Efficiency (TCE) engine replaces the old 1.4-litre unit in the Clio line-up. The powerplant has more torque available lower down the rev range than its bigger predecessor, and it’s more efficient, too. We’ve already tried the TCE motor in the new Twingo, but how does it fare in the larger Clio?
You’ll find it hard to tell it apart from a normally aspirated 1.4-litre unit
You’ll find it hard to tell it apart from a normally aspirated 1.4-litre unit. Delivering 145Nm of torque at 3,000rpm, it pulls strongly and takes 11.1 seconds to complete the benchmark 0-60mph sprint, which is two-tenths of a second faster than the old 1.4 model. It only comes with a five-speed gearbox, so it’s not the most refined powerplant at motorway speeds, but it’s perfect for the cut and thrust of urban driving.
Fuel economy is also impressive, as it returns a combined figure of 47.9mpg, while CO2 emissions of 139g/km place it in company car tax band C. The steering is light and responsive, if a little oversensitive, while the Clio handles well, with a sharp turn-in and smooth ride.
It’s practical, too, and although this mid-spec Dynamique S model is generously equipped, TCE power can be yours with the entry-level Expression model for only £10,540.
