Land Rover Discovery 4

Revamped 4x4 promises to be better than ever

Land Rover Discovery 4

The Discovery is becoming more distinguished with age! A mid-life makeover has made the Land Rover workhorse more luxurious, efficient and capable off-road than ever – and we’ve driven the Discovery 4 on UK roads for the first time.

There’s a Range Rover-style grille, plus LED lights front and rear. Inside, a new leather-wrapped dash architecture has reduced the number of buttons, and gives a more luxurious feel.

The Terrain Response system – the brains behind the Disco’s incredible off-road ability – is improved, too. Drivers can now choose between a variety of settings tailored for specific surfaces including snow, sand, gravel, rocks, mud and ruts.

On the road, new dampers and tweaked steering produce  a composed ride, road noise is kept to a minimum, while cornering ability is impressive.

The Discovery can now be specified with the improved 3.0 TDV6, which is 29 per cent more powerful, yet nine per cent less thirsty, than the old 2.7-litre.

It’s one of the finest diesels on sale, and the 600Nm of torque makes light work of the car’s size to ensure the Disco 4 is genuinely fast. A fitting engine for the best all-round 4x4 on the market.

Rival: Volvo XC90

Swedish SUV is getting on a bit, but has been a big hit. With its seven-seat practicality, great build and top safety, it’s a real class act.

FIRST OPINION

Some will argue that Land Rover is treading on the Range Rover’s toes by giving the Discovery greater luxury and style. But with its more functional looks and seven-seat practicality, the model is still set apart from the rest of the range. What the firm has done is improve on-road refinement, make the cabin more sumptuous and still boost rugged ability. For large, wealthy families, it’s all the car you’ll ever need.
