British drivers love their Land Rovers. But elsewhere in the world, it’s the Toyota Land Cruiser that rules the roost.
Although touted as all-new for 2010, this facelifted model offers only subtle changes. A larger front bumper and bigger wheelarches make it slightly longer and wider than its already massive predecessor.
Inside, there’s a new modern dash in what is otherwise an ageing cabin. Chunky switchgear is in keeping with the car’s Tonka-toy image and the materials feel robust, despite looking dated. If it’s seven-seat practicality and gadgets galore you’re after, though, you won’t be disappointed.
On the road, the addition of continuously adaptive dampers reduces body roll, while road and wind noise at motorway speeds is much improved. A four-cylinder diesel engine is now the only option in the UK, but it isn’t as smooth as Land Rover’s 3.0 TDV6. Nevertheless, it suits the Toyota’s workhorse character.

I'll reserve judgement until I see it but it is surprising that you don't mention that the Land Cruiser is in Band K and thus 'only' £215 pa to tax compared with the £405 for many of its competitors (inc the Disco).
Also you mention it being 'massive' and it is hardly small but it is significantly narrower than a Touareg, Discovery, X5 and not much, if any, longer than these either so this can hardly count against it.
The there is the proven reliability...
I think to leave out the legendary reliability of the Land Cruiser is a little surprising as that's one of its main "assets". I had one for three years and that car just never seems to ever go wrong with all the battering it received on and off-road. I'm however a bit disappointed Toyota still held on to the 171bhp engine. At least the special edition model of the invincible with 201 bhp would have been better than 171 bhp. The V8 diesel engine in the V8 version would have been even better! I should dream on?!
Traded in the Amazon for the New Land Cruiser LC5....LOVE IT TO BITS does everything that's needed and much more.......Well done Toyota
The Land Cruiser is a niche choice in the UK, and the latest model doesn’t change that. Its cabin is as well equipped as a Discovery, if not as high quality. And while it has an indestructible image, the big Toyota feels as if it’s from a bygone era.
