Even at the asking price of nearly ΂£70,000, few cars are as eagerly awaited as the new Mercedes SL. With UK order books full for the next year, the first well heeled customers are anticipating the imminent arrival of their cars. We couldn't bear to queue any longer, so sneaked up the line and slid into the driver's seat of the first right-hand-drive example.

For now, only the 5.0-litre V8-engined SL500 is available. As you'd expect, the interior offers the luxury and comfort of a five-star hotel, but it's the way in which the vast powerplant works with the chassis and suspension that really impresses.

The folding metal roof is an engineering masterpiece, and you never tire of watching it stow neatly in the boot. Quite simply, the SL is one of the finest all-round sports cars money can buy. The 306bhp unit propels the car effortlessly from 0-60mph in only seven seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

Add the adaptability of the ABC active suspension and the SL matches the comfort of a limousine with the cross-country pace of a Porsche 911. Only the comparatively lifeless steering lets the handling down. New hi-tech brakes complete the package, helping the big Merc drop its pace with incredible ease. Even at high speeds on uneven surfaces, the car feels very stable.

The famed SL badge has a long and distinguished history. And, from the driver's seat of Mercedes' latest incarnation, a brilliant future lies ahead!
