A cheaper way into BMW M car ownership is only just around the corner! Enthusiasts that think the BMW M3 has grown too big will rejoice at the idea of a proper M version of the 1-Series Coupé. It's now official and we've experienced it from the passenger seat.
BMW's test driver didn't hang about as he attacked the corners of the Ascari race circuit in Spain. Though he was unwilling to divulge too much about the car it was clear that it's powered by a turbocharged straight-six, as in the 135i, though with power upped to about 350bhp.
This is fed to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox and a version of the M3's clever rear M differential. It's likely that a dual-clutch automatic will be offered too. On the limit the differential can be felt at work, allowing the driver to use more of the power through corners more of the time.
Turn-in on entry to a corner is impressive, with scant body roll. Grip levels on the test car's 19-inch alloys were high too and the massive brakes should cope well with the performance.
Even though the prototype is covered in black and white swirls it's clear that the extended rear haunches, lower ride height and trademark quad exhausts will result in a fabulous looking car. Inside, it's likely to be very well equipped.
Eager UK buyers will have to wait until June 2011 to get their hands on the new baby M car.

This promises to be a great motor car, a true 'pocket rocket', as 3 & 5 Beemers have tended to get a bit porky as they develop - reminds me of when I used to race a 2002TI - I see BM are keeping the "PR" quad exhaust, which on a 6 cylinder car is purely cosmetic - one or two pipes being more efficient - lastly, I was puzzled by Shane's remark that their was 'not enough' (scant) body roll? what can he mean?

At last, a beemer that puts a smile back on your face...
I'd love one of these, 350bhp in a car this small with RWD to boot is a recipe for fun, fun, fun... :)
@KM 2002Ti = yummy ;)
Think of the BMW 1-Series M Coupé as an amalgamation of the 135i and the M3; a wide track and low ride height set it apart from the rest of the 1-Series line-up yet it retains a version of the 135i's engine. While the car is fast, it's the way it goes around corners that impresses. It feels light and nimble with great turn-in and real throttle adjustability. Get your order in now
