Audi A2 FSI

The current A2 is hardly conventional. With a squat stance, all-aluminium bodyshell and quality interior, the baby Audi is far from the small-car norm. But until now, the engine op-tions have been surprisingly run-of-the-mill and restricted to 75bhp 1.4-litre petrol or turbodiesel units. That's all changed, however, with the arrival of the 1.6-litre FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection) powerplant. It uses technology similar to that of common-rail turbodiesel engines, but burns petrol.

A high-pressure pump squirts fuel directly into the combustion chamber resulting in a more controlled performance and better economy. The FSI produces 109bhp and 155Nm, yet is more frugal than the 1.4, returning an average of 48mpg. The increased power is enough to drive the ultra-light Audi to 60mph in 9.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 125mph.

To complement such performance, the car has closer-ratio gears, rear disc brakes and a bigger boot spoiler for optimum high-speed stability. In response to criticism of the A2's firm ride, there are also softer dampers
