No self-respecting hot-rodder would be seen down at the drive-in without a set of chrome alloy wheels and a variety of bolt-on body appendages. Chrysler knows it, and that's why, when the PT Cruiser first appeared here two years ago, its emphasis was on the styling.

But that was also a problem because, while the Cruiser looked great with its retro-lines and coffin-nosed bonnet, it was all show and no go. Nobody would even consider buying a Cruiser because of its performance. Finally, though, that's about to change. The American manufacturing giant has just unleashed a turbocharged variant of the PT, and it's tipped to hit UK showrooms as soon as next year.

Power in this performance model has been boosted to 215bhp, while torque jumps from 220Nm to 332Nm

FIRST OPINION

It looks as though the PT Cruiser could finally become the hot rod it has always promised to be... but only if Chrysler builds it in right-hand-drive form. The turbocharged version is an absolute hoot to drive, with effortless power and surprisingly good roadholding. You should lobby your Chrysler dealer now!
