US muscle car delivers real pace, but comes at a price

Fancy flexing some American muscle? This is the Corvette Grand Sport, a new version of the US sports car that slots into the range above the standard C6 and below the Z06 and even faster supercharged ZR-1.

So, the Grand Sport gets big cross-drilled brakes, a wide front end that features a central air-intake, and a neat pair of white stripes on the front wings.

It’s powered by a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 with 431bhp, so it’s as rapid as its extrovert looks suggest, going from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 186mph.

It’s also a surprisingly laid-back cruiser. The ride is firm, but the tall gearing of the auto box means it’s happy at low revs on the motorway. Only when you change down with the steering wheel-mounted paddles do the quad exhausts make their presence felt. What’s more, the big rear tyres mean there’s a huge amount of grip in the dry.

On narrow or wet roads, it’s a different story. The tail is twitchy, and the combination of the wide body, low nose and left-hand-drive layout makes it difficult to drive. The rest of the car feels very American, with dated interior plastics in the cramped cockpit, a slow canvas roof and a serious thirst for petrol.

We could forgive it these shortcomings, but not if you consider that you could buy a Porsche 911 for the same money.

You've got to be kidding me

Two stars ? Get real. This is English cynicism at its finest.

The car looks a lot better than most of the crap Europeans put out these days, inside and out. And that 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 is probably a gem. No replacement for displacement, screw the 170 HP 1.4's, they are horrible.

This has to be the smug quote of the year. You're the ones driving on the wrong side of the road, so get off that high horse of yours.

The car looks absolutely amazing. And btw, please make up your mind about cars already... Yes, you're into Porsche territory cost-wise, but as you often say, Porsches are just too tame these days, packed with electronics. I thought you wanted sports cars that aim to kill you, so what's wrong with this one ?

P.S. I'm an European fed up with all the fake and sponsored car reviews.

The car feels very "American"? What's that supposed to mean? Yes- its an American car and while I will fully disclose that I am an American I have spent a lifetime driving both Japanese and European cars and while the interiors of many American cars were indeed pretty bad in the 80's, 90's and even early 2000's I can guarantee that if you were to tear off the label of the vast majority of today's American cars and sit down in them you would never know the car was American. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the overall fit and finish, quality, and value of the ranges coming from GM and Ford are now every bit as good, if not better than anything coming out of Europe or Japan. The fact that domestic big 3 sales are increasing at double-digit rates is further proof that what they are doing is working well.

But getting back to the review of the Corvette. It- perhaps more than any other sports car brand- is more true to its roots than probably any other sports car. You don't but cars like these because you want cushy heated seats, chilled cupholders or whatever else you might expect in a luxury car. This car is built for one purpose only- to go fast and do it pretty quickly.

Lastly, if I were someone in the UK and I wanted a car that was a bit more unusual I'd probably go for a Covette, seeing as how these are a rare sight over there.

Not at all bias then

I am amazed that every time I read a review of a Corvette they trot out the same old rubbish.
Serious thirst for fuel, untrue I average 23 mpg in mine mixed motoring, around 29mpg cursing on motorway. For a car with this performance that imho is good.
Sure blasting around a track this falls into single figures as do Porches, Ferraris. Lambos etc.

Taking into consideration the type of car they are, they are seriously cheap to run, servicing for the first 100,000 miles consists of just fluid changes costing £200 ish.
Far less than Porches, Ferraris etc

Looks are subjective but all the comments I receive, are very positive, everyone seems to love them, never received any negativity.

Its LH drive, its low and wide difficult to drive, thats not my experience, you soon get used to LH drive, have you considered you may be in the wrong job.

Its not at its best down narrow lanes, true, neither are Porsche, Audi R8, Lambo's, Ferraris, Rollers, Bentley's etc etc its not rocket science those cars are wide, the lanes are narrow never hear it said about the other cars though.
Cramped cockpit, its made to accommodate obese Americans you must be very large indeed. Good boot space too, especially in the coupe.
To sum up a iconic sports car, a fine GT with one of the worlds great engines(100 millionth small block V8 will roll off the line this year) doesn't cost a fortune to run and its different .

YMCA

Looks great, good engine BUT to be seen driving one of these in Britain you'll need to be listening to the village people, have plenty of hair gel and moisturise.

You'd look cool driving down highway 1 in the Florida Keys but here......... you'll look like a twat.

FIRST OPINION

The Grand Sport will certainly get you noticed – the brash muscle car looks and thumping V8 soundtrack are all part of the classic Corvette recipe. Yet, at £70,196, there are no excuses for its cheap interior and unforgiving dynamics. This automatic is a little easier to live with than the searingly quick, more powerful manual versions, but unless you’re a true enthusiast for American cars, it’s hard to justify.
