The V60 T6 Polestar is one of the wildest estates money can buy, from the world’s most sensible car manufacturer. It’s also the most powerful Volvo ever.

Essentially a standard V60 T6, the car has had its 3.0-litre V6 engine remapped by Swedish tuner Polestar. It now delivers 329bhp – that’s 29bhp more than the standard car, but fortunately the warranty stays intact.

It does 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds, which is six-tenths quicker than the standard T6 and on a par with the BMW 335i Touring.

Yet despite the £645 engine upgrade, there are no other changes to the car, apart from a small square badge on the boot.

That leaves the V60 T6 Polestar feeling confused. The razor-sharp throttle response and rapid acceleration conflict with the
lazy auto box, numb steering and muted exhaust note.

Only the firm suspension is in keeping with the lively character of the engine. It controls the large body well, but crashes over big bumps. Although fun to drive, this is a quirky model that appeals to the heart, not the head.

wrong engine

the 3.0 litre engine is a inline 6 not a v6 engine, that's why it's called a i6 not a v6.

FIRST OPINION

Volvo has a history of making fast estates – it brought us the 850R in the nineties – and the V60 T6 Polestar follows in that tradition. There’s no doubting the engine’s potency, but sadly the car’s incredible straight-line pace isn’t matched by sharp handling. On the plus side, the V60 looks stylish and feels robustly put together. And if you’re in the market for a top-of-the-range T6 model, £645 for an extra 29bhp seems good value.
