Very nice review. I was weighing between the Scirocco and the 1.4t and 1.6t and your review was helpful. I would like some more insight though on the steering feel. Does the FlexRide fix the "vague" electric steering or is it unchanged? Is the Scrirocco feel that noticeable?
Hi, I drove the full GTC range on the launch, and the FlexRide system doesn't have much of an impact on steering feel, although the 'sport' setting adds a bit of extra weight.
As for the vagueness of the steering, the Scirocco is definitely that bit sharper, but they're both good, and it's only a difference you'd really notice if you drove them back to back. The Astra's much bigger inside though, so if you carry people around a lot then go for the GTC, it's cheaper too.

Given that Vauxhall wants to distance this from the 5-door, they could've tried a bit harder with the styling. A funkier front end, with the lower grille joined to the headlights maybe? Different upper grille? Bolder colours? (I confess I haven't looked at the options but doubt there'll be an orange, fluoro green or bright blue available...)
Thank you much. Although I fancy the Scirocco slightly more I think I'll go for the GTC. My previous GTC has been a fun and trouble free car for the last 5 years so I 'll give my vote of confidence to the Astra.
If you want ultimate hot hatch thrills, you should wait for the 276bhp VXR. But this 138bhp version of the GTC hits a sweet spot between price, economy and performance. Its wider track and suspension tweaks have made quite a difference, and the 1.4-litre turbo has the punch to make the most of the talented chassis. A spacious cabin and boot mean the Astra maintains its family car status despite losing two doors.
