It and its predecessors were designed as all terrain virtually go anywhere vehicles! And thats why most people buy them and not for shopping at Sainsburys or showing off in Brompton Road or Sloan Square or collecting screaming spoilt kids from prep schools or kindergartens!!
Its a great and extremely reliable vehicle - if you use it right and treat it accordingly! Well done Land Rover!!
What a poor review, not targeted towards the primary use of the Defender. Why write a couple of paragraphs on how a bad choice it is for road use, when the Freelander is clearly the LandRover for that market. May I respectfully suggest you either get the relevant experience of what your are reviewing or don't bother at all.
I drove Land Rovers for 18 year as my only mode of transport. First three years a series 3 LWB Safari. Then for 15 years a 90 county. I averaged between 12000 to 16000 a year. I found the County a comfortable vehicle and averaged 30 MPG. I had to sell the County for two reasons. It was getting old 285000 on the clock and costing to much to keep on the road and I was retiring and wanted some economical cheap to run transport. The old simple no electronic Landies are the most practical particularly in third world countries, where with a set of spanners and a big hammer you could do any job on a landy.
The new concept Land Rover may sell well pushing through the jungles and deserts of Chelsea but it will never replace the old Defender.
The Land Rover Defender is a landmark in automotive history, and the latest round of updates means it’s still the car of choice if you need a dependable, rugged 4x4 that can go virtually anywhere. It’s more refined than before on the road, and it certainly looks smart, but the fact it demands so many compromises means you could only really justify buying one if you plan to do a lot of off-road driving.
