Although Mitsubishi was among the first to produce more compact people carriers, its rivals have perfected the art of selling them. Keen pricing and practicality mean models such as Citroen's Picasso are hugely popular, while the Space Star is still a rare sight on UK roads.

Will a revamp do anything to address this? Mitsubishi hasn't used a blank canvas for the second-generation version, but instead gone for a mid-life touch-up. Minimal exterior changes include a redesigned front end complete with colour-keyed bumper, integrated grille and new-look headlights, while alloy wheels are now standard. Among the interior alterations are a new-style flush surface centre console and a four-spoke steering wheel. Thanks to the cabin's unusual high design, it feels very spacious with acres of headroom, while the upright driving position is comfortable and offers good access to all the controls. Yet despite the restyling, you won't get the same visual excitement or family friendly features found in the Picasso or Renault's Scenic

FIRST OPINION

The Space Star sits between hatch and mini-MPV, but has little to tempt buyers from either market. Although keenly priced, with good access, cabin space and warranty, its dynamics are never going to get the blood pumping and it lacks rivals' interior flexibility.
