Volkswagen has proved its point. The company set out to prove it had the technological might to take on the likes of Mercedes in the super-saloon market, and its range-topping W12-engined Phaeton showed it could succeed.

Volkswagen has proved its point. The company set out to prove it had the technological might to take on the likes of Mercedes in the super-saloon market, and its range-topping W12-engined Phaeton showed it could succeed.

But while the W12 has hogged the limelight so far, it's the more 'humble' versions which are expected to take the majority of sales.
