Subaru Impreza S206

Last-of-line Impreza super saloon goes out with a bang

Subaru Impreza S206 front cornering

December 2011

The ultimate limited-edition Impreza has been unleashed. Only 300 of these more powerful rally-bred STi S206 models will be built – and just 100 of those will feature the NBR Challenge Package tested here, designed to celebrate Subaru’s class win in the 2011 Nürburgring 24 Hour race.

With its unique 19-inch BBS rims, carbon fibre rear wing and carbon roof, the STi S206 really looks the part. Inside are Recaro sport seats, wrapped in leather and Alcantara, and S206 badging.

Power from the 2.0-litre boxer turbo is up from 301bhp to 316bhp, while torque increases from 393Nm to 431Nm. The engine is hand-built, and the secret to the improved performance is a low-friction turbo, remapped ECU and free-flowing exhaust that boosts low and mid-range torque. The suspension has special inverted Bilstein dampers and stiffer springs, and those 19-inch rims are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sports rubber.

Right from the off we switch the vehicle dynamics control (VDC) to its sportiest setting and floor the throttle. Immediately you can feel the extra torque between 3,000rpm and 4,000rpm, giving extra pace on the exit of corners and making it easier to drive at low speeds.

It’s in the bends where the S206 really sets itself apart, though – cornering fast, flat and with huge grip, it refuses to understeer no matter how violently you turn in. The suspension even manages to feel supple in a straight line.

There’s bad news, however: a combination of the strong Yen and emissions regulations mean that the ultimate Impreza won’t officially be sold in Britain. If you’re interested, don’t despair – a handful of grey imports are sure to make it to the UK.

????

So if this is such a capable machine why again does it get 3 stars? Come on AE, I am no Subaru fan (the cars are plain ugly) but apart from that it seems this is a strong, fast and engaging machine. If your comments were for a VW, Audi or BMW it would be at least 4.5 stars. Not fair.

I'd rather see some sort of NACA ducts on the front fenders rather than those cheap aftermarket looking chrome vents. The rear spoiler looks like an old TV antenna, also. I like the white/black roof combination, and I love Subies in general. This is priced through the roof, though.

downsize the wing

Is it really 2.0 boxer engine or the old 2.5 one? If SUBARU goes along the trend of downsizing, better to do it with this ugly, useless, horrendous, ridiculous rear wing. Anyone above age of 14 will tell it is rubbish.

Looks amazing

Apart from the silly wing, this looks like one seriously focused Impreza, but how can AE estimate a price of £70k when it is only being sold in Japan? I take it this refers to the equivilant price in pounds when it goes on sale in Japan.

I would assume the star rating takes value into account - £70k is a lot for a Subaru! For me to consider this it would need to be significantly cheaper than an M3

THIS CAR IS A SUZUKI KAZASHI AKA NEW SHAPE SUZUKI BALANO......

Because GM owns suzuki & subaru & if you have eyes you will see that this is a suzuki kazashi saloon with a subaru 4+4 system boxer engine & subaru impreza badges & THE MOST stupid price tag i have ever seen. A suzuki kazashi is worth about £15k i know it's priced at around the £21k mark, but in my opinion i think it's worth £15k tops, so how much is a subaru boxer engine worth £2k lets just say £5k to be genorous, now how much for a subaru 4+4 system upto £10k shall we say to be more genorous, What does that make £30k to £35k so where do they get £70k from ? I would'nt even pay £30k for this bland, plastic drizzle of a car there are many more cars out there around the £30k mark that are better quality, better looking & better equipped than this car that have the same performance 155mph & 0.60 in 4.5 secs, Old car Old engine etc etc Subaru need to start with a clean sheet of paper & i don't mean tracing paper !

'BEREAL' GET FACTS STRAIGHT Before Commenting-

GM does not own Subaru and never did, GM used to have a small share (21%) of FHI - Subaru's parent company - which Toyota motor co bought a chunk of and the rest was sold to a Japanese bank. GM has nothing to do with Subaru any more. Furthermore, GM do not and never did own Suzuki. Again they had a 20% share of Suzuki which was sold in 2008 so they have no ties with Suzuki aside from ongoing manufacture of Suzuki Splash being rebadged as Vauxhall/Opel, for GM. 'BEREAL' don't comment on these stories unless you have any knowledge of what your talking about or you look like a twit -as you do.....

I agree with PAAdam

I agree with PAAdam

If this had been the latest 325i with a new gearbox, the headline would've been along the lines of "OMG!!! BEST EVER ULTIMATE 325I!!!!111"

AEs bias is getting beyond a joke now.

Price

@cousins11, I think AE are taking the base price of the car and then adding their estimated import costs... Which I'm guessing would be quite a lot due to shipping fees, shipping agent fees, import duty and customs duty...

FIRST OPINION

The S206 is Subaru’s final farewell to the current Impreza, and the company has saved the best until last. More power and uprated suspension mean you can carry crazy speed into corners and accelerate harder on the other side. The NBR pack includes a rear wing and carbon roof, too. The car won’t officially go on sale here, so if you’re interested, a grey import is your only option – and that won’t be cheap.
