Mitsubishi SUP Cabrio

What SUP?

It might sound as if it's part of Batman's kit, but the Sports Utility Pack or SUP is a four-door concept for the 21st century which proves there's more to Mitsubishi than rally-bred off-roaders.

It might sound as if it's part of Batman's kit, but the Sports Utility Pack or SUP is a four-door concept for the 21st century which proves there's more to Mitsubishi than rally-bred off-roaders.

A product of the firm's new chief engineer, Olivier Boulay, the crazy looking convertible combines a radical approach to design with some interesting ideas. The front and rear lights, for instance, are housed in a narrow tube which runs along the entire circumference of the car. Translucent side panels double as carry bags - ideal for thieves, and hard to take seriously.

However, the hybrid electric 4x4 drivetrain is of real interest. It features a GDI direct-injection engine and two electric motors - one connected to each rear wheel. These provide power during hard acceleration, and can drive each axle independently to induce yaw and improve cornering performance.

FIRST OPINION

The Japanese manufacturer's SUP concept car is designed to be the ultimate poseur-mobile for soft-top fans, but also features some genuinely innovative touches. If you can look beyond the rather ill-proportioned styling and tasteless interior, the hi-tech hybrid electric transmission steals the limelight.
