Porsche Boxster S

Boxster bargain

Few cars can compete with a Porsche 911. But this machine comes very close - and it costs £24,000 less! That's the price difference between the cheapest 911 Cabriolet and the top-spec Boxster S, which has been revised for the 2003 model year.

Few cars can compete with a Porsche 911. But this machine comes very close - and it costs ΂£24,000 less! That's the price difference between the cheapest 911 Cabriolet and the top-spec Boxster S, which has been revised for the 2003 model year. As with the standard car we tested in Issue 719, the latest version of the S gets larger air intakes, deeper bumpers and a glass rear window, plus new 17-inch alloys and twin oval exhausts. There's more power, too, and the S now kicks out 260bhp and 310Nm of torque, 32bhp and 50Nm more than a standard Boxster.

This is most noticeable at low revs, where the car picks up speed quickly in any of the six gears. It's not quite a match for the 911's 320bhp, but still enough for most drivers. The handling remains incredible as Porsche decided not to tinker with the chassis.

Instead, by increasing the power output and improving all-round performance, one of the finest driver's cars ever made has got better still.

FIRST OPINION

Why bother to buy a Porsche 911 Cabriolet when its Boxster brother is equally as good to drive and just as stunning to look at, but costs more than £24,000 less? With supercar performance and incredible handling, the revised Boxster S seems great value for money.
