We've already reviewed Fiat's new JTD-powered Stilo Multi Wagon, but the Italian giant is not only relying on an oil-burner to help revive its fortunes. If petrol engines are for you, there's a 1.6 or 1.8 litre to choose from.

The smaller unit delivers 103bhp, with 145Nm of torque at 4,000rpm and a top speed of 114mph. While this may seem underpowered, performance is keen but somewhat noisy. Generally, though, the 1.6 engine is competent enough. Unfortunately, the 133bhp 1.8-litre version is less convincing. The five-speed gearbox is no more fluid to use than that in the 1.6, and the 0-60mph acceleration time is only slightly quicker at 10.6 seconds.

There's an extra helping of top-end performance which makes motorway cruising less strained, although inclines require frequent gearshifts to maintain a steady pace. Some will find the handling uninspiring, although in City mode the ultra-light electronic steering makes urban manoeuvring easy. But no matter which powerplant is chosen, the Stilo MW's trump card is likely to be its impressive load capacity.

The boot offers a class-leading 510 litres of totally flat floor space, which can be increased to 550 litres if the car is fitted with the optional sliding rear seats. Additional plus points for the interior include tip-down chairs that convert to picnic tables, plenty of cup-holders and excellent visibility.

FIRST OPINION

While the JTD oil-burners will make up the majority of MW sales, Fiat is covering the bases with a pair of petrol engines, too. Both these 16-valve units offer runabout pace, but need working through the gears under load. Expect the 1.6-litre version to be the more popular choice.
