Subaru Legacy STi

Scaring sports car owners with the Impreza STi is clearly not enough for Subaru drivers. As a result, the firm is to offer fans the chance to move into the big league with this 300bhp Legacy. Laun-ched earlier this month, Auto Express was first behind the wheel of the saloon. Although not coming to the UK through main dealers, grey importers will offer the car for around £32,000.

Scaring sports car owners with the Impreza STi is clearly not enough for Subaru drivers. As a result, the firm is to offer fans the chance to move into the big league with this 300bhp Legacy. Laun-ched earlier this month, Auto Express was first behind the wheel of the saloon. Although not coming to the UK through main dealers, grey importers will offer the car for around ΂£32,000.

It's the first time Subaru's tuning arm, STi, has turned its attention to the Legacy. As well as its potent 2.0-litre engine, this Legacy has a six-speed gearbox, four-wheel-drive and limited slip differentials on both axles. The car also features uprated brakes, and robust suspen-sion settings inspired by the new Im-preza, which we drove in Issue 730.

The changes ensure the new Leg-acy is safer, more stable and capable of slowing quickly in an emergency. The performance upgrades mean this Legacy loses some of the refinement of previous editions, replacing it with more grip and a ferocious engine. But impressive as it is, it is only the beginning of Subaru's aims for its STi wing.

A high-performance 265bhp edition of the Forester, which boasts a similar engine and running gear to the Impreza STi, is expected to go on sale officially in British showrooms next year.

FIRST OPINION

The attention of STi has certainly given the ageing Legacy a new lease of life. But the fact this car will not be available officially is bound to put some drivers off.
