When bringing together the most exciting new cars from across the performance spectrum, one always springs to mind - the Impreza. As if the STi Type UK version isn't quick enough, a new package from rally specialist Prodrive hikes power to a staggering 300bhp. So is the most potent version polished enough to shine in this stiff competition? After the previous Impreza's bug-eyed front was criticised, the restyled nose seems better looking but still purposeful. There are also cabin improvements, with smarter trim and a general increase in refinement.

More significant changes come under the skin. Both the engine and suspension have been revised to make the Impreza even more involving. It's still not for the fainthearted, but it's easier to master than the Evo VIII. A wider front axle plus sharper steering allow the STi to turn in faster, grip harder and take corners quicker. The downside is that with the changes there's a greater tendency to tramline and follow ruts. The Prodrive performance pack is purely an increase in power across the rev range, because the standard STi already has hi-tech differentials front and rear, Brembo brakes and a six-speed box.

With its huge bonnet air intake and rear wing, this Impreza isn't for the shy and retiring - and nor is its performance. The changes bring the 0-60mph time down to 4.6 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 155mph.

On sale now, the latest Impreza will cost ΂£24,995 in STi form, but those who simply must go even faster will have to pay an extra ΂£1,995 for the Prodrive performance pack. Even against cheaper rivals seen here, it seems worth the money, and the Impreza is still hard to beat for all-wheel-drive rally thrills.
