What's more, believe it or not, the gearshift on the £12,195 supermini is actually smoother than on the £97,000 Italian supercar. The system is available only on the 110bhp 1.6-litre C3, and costs £200 more than the standard manual. Outside, the car is unchanged, but inside the gearlever is swapped for a sequential stick, while big paddles are fitted behind the steering wheel.
These are made from sturdy steel and feel good to the touch. Unfortunately, they are mounted on the steering column, which means they don't move with the wheel. To change up, you flick the right paddle; to change down, the left. If you wish, you can use the sequential stick instead.
On the move, upshifts aren't quite as fast as in a manual but, unlike some similar systems, they are smooth and accurate. We found lifting off the throttle for a split-second between ratios helped transitions. However, it's on the downshifts where the SensoDrive really excels. It automatically blips the throttle to ensure a smooth change. If you feel really lazy, you can select fully auto mode, but be prepared for clunky changes.
