A decade ago, the prospect of a turbocharged Skoda would have seemed absurd. Yet today, the firm has nine blown models - two petrols and seven with VW's fine 1.9-litre turbodiesels under the bonnet.

This is the latest addition - the Octavia TDI 130. It uses the same punchy engine as VW's Golf PD GTI, and while it might look quite ordinary, it is one of the most surprising Skodas yet. A 0-60mph sprint of 9.7 seconds doesn't seem that fast, but it's the way the Octavia delivers its power that impresses.

Thanks to six well spaced gears, the motor can be easily kept at its peak, while huge torque means it feels willing and eager, even from low revs. The unit might sound clattery when cold, but on the motorway the sixth gear means it pulls only a fraction over 2,000rpm, making for a quiet, relaxing drive. That, coupled to 52mpg economy and a CO2 rating of 149g/km, puts it in the lowest company car tax band for diesels.

At about ΂£15,000 for the estate driven here, or ΂£14,300 for the saloon, it also represents fine value. But for some, the ignominy of owning a Skoda means they'd rather fork out a lot more for a great deal less. It's their loss - the 130 TDI is the best Octavia yet.

FIRST OPINION

It's impossible to argue against the TDI 130's logic. It's hugely practical, fun, great value and excellently screwed together. If you don't mind the Skoda badge - and you're daft if you do - it is a brilliant package at a fine price.
