Essentially a Leon with a more defined boot, the Toledo is the forgotten SEAT, but line it up against the more expensive Volkswagen Bora and it's well worth a look. The range-topping 2.3-litre V5 unit still powers the most expensive model, but this new 180bhp Sport will attract driving enthusiasts with its 0-60mph time of eight seconds and maximum speed of 142mph. Unfortunately, if you use all the power, you might be disappointed.
Although this is the same engine as in the Leon Cupra, the Toledo rides on standard suspension rather than sharing the sporty set-up of its sibling. Despite plenty of understeer and body roll when cornering, though, the Toledo is easy to drive and competent on a challenging road. It's no secret that the 20-valve 1.8-litre is an impressive engine, and its torquey nature suits this four-door SEAT's mature character.
Whereas peak power doesn't come until 5,500rpm, maximum torque arrives at only 1,950rpm, providing effortless acceleration. There is a catch, as the engine note can sound coarse. But its potent performance, combined with fuel returns of 33.2mpg, will be more than enough compensation for most people.
The new Toledo Sport is priced at £14,995, which is exactly the same as a Leon Cupra. Crucially, however, this undercuts Volkswagen's identically engined Bora Sport saloon by £3,110. So, while this powerplant might not be the freshest, it's never been better value.
