Porsche Carrera C4S Cabrio

Turbo tease

Question: When is a 911 Turbo not a 911 Turbo? Answer: When it's a C4S. Love or loathe the idea, Porsche knows only too well that there's a big market for a car that delivers all the musclebound looks of its 911 Turbo range-topper without the £87,250 price and all the insurance implications that go with it.

Question: When is a 911 Turbo not a 911 Turbo? Answer: When it's a C4S. Love or loathe the idea, Porsche knows only too well that there's a big market for a car that delivers all the musclebound looks of its 911 Turbo range-topper without the ΂£87,250 price and all the insurance implications that go with it.

But while the C4S Cabriolet is a welcome addition to the 911 range, the idea isn't exactly new. Porsche has been knocking out similar machines since the introduction of the less-than-subtly titled "turbo look" cabrio in the mid-Eighties. However, while the name has changed over the years, the basic principle remains the same.

True to form, the newcomer is ess-entially a four-wheel-drive Carrera 4 convertible cloaked with the wide-boy body of the Turbo coup

FIRST OPINION

In some respects, driving the C4S is a little like biting into a doughnut with no jam in it. But get past feeling you're in a car that's pretending to be something it isn't, and the newcomer is thoroughly rewarding. All the 911 charms are there; it goes, stops and steers beautifully and makes that utterly unique sound. The build is first class, while the automatic top is Porsche's most impressive system to date.
