Just because it's practical doesn't mean it can't be good-looking... That's the message behind the new Renault Scenic, launched in Britain this week. While the car has the boxy dimensions required to seat a family of five in comfort, it still manages to turn heads with its daring design.
Targeting rivals such as our New Car Honours champion, the VW Touran, and Ford's Focus C-MAX, the Scenic aims to set new standards in this competitive class with its dramatic lines and versatile interior. But the Renault has a lot to live up to, as the car it replaces effectively invented the mini-MPV sector in 1996. Has the newcomer got what it takes to set the pace again?

FIRST OPINION
- The new Scenic doesn't redefine a sector or cause any revolutions. There's no seven-seat option yet, but if you need to carry only five, the Renault does refine the mini-MPV concept. We would prefer weightier steering and a brighter interior, but this is a capable mile muncher and a great kid carrier.
