With radical styling now being a BMW trademark, the X5 was beginning to look a little old. However, that is all set to change early next year, when this facelifted model goes on sale.

The smooth bonnet has been replaced by a flared one, while the trademark kidney grille has grown and changed shape to give more than a hint of Z4. Headlights similar to those of the new 5-Series and clear-lens rear lamp clusters complete the visual changes, while inside the only differences are a new steering wheel and gearlever.

But following the launch of the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, BMW has been forced into improving the X5's off-road ability. The new X-Drive system uses complex electronics to distribute traction in slippery conditions, while it also has improved Descent Control that allows drivers to set the speed when going downhill using the cruise control switch between 2 and 8mph. Even on standard tyres, our car performed well on an off-road course. It won't worry a serious mud-plugger, but is better than a Mercedes ML, for example.

This 4.4i is expected to be a big hit in the US, although in Europe the V8 accounts for less than a fifth of sales. Still, the old 4.4-litre engine has been dropped, and in its place is a detuned version of the 745i's 4.5-litre. It delivers superb performance and unrivalled refinement at speed, while dynamically the X5 remains as good as it ever was.
