Another new model with a Merc SLK-style folding hard-top has been launched - but this time it's American. Cadillac's XLR two-seater has been on sale in the US since September, but from next month is available in Europe.

It's an impressive performer; the 326bhp 4.6-litre V8 is eager and responsive, while the Driver Shift Control gearbox moves from fully automatic mode to a five-speed manual with a flick of the wrist. Pushing the XLR to its performance limits, it gives excellent stability and grip on the twistiest roads.

Priced at around ΂£67,500, the luxury roadster is left-hand drive only and offered in just one trim level. Standard kit includes keyless access and ignition, so as long as the driver is carrying the fob, the doors will unlock and the engine will start.

There's also a high-quality sound system with speakers in the seats, a head-up display that projects information on to the windscreen and adaptive cruise control which prevents you from running into the back of the car in front.

FIRST OPINION

The XLR would be a true Jaguar XK8 and Mercedes SL500 rival if it wasn't LHD only and had more cabin room. Still, it's worth a look if you're after something different.
