At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the designers have forgotten to do their job - the FR looks very similar to a standard model. The stylish alloy wheels and less impressive titanium-effect wing mirrors are subtle, almost to the extent of going unnoticed.
Thankfully, out on the road this Ibiza is far less lukewarm. The four-cylinder petrol engine produces 148bhp, and the FR will hit 60mph from a standstill in 8.4 seconds, before going on to a maximum speed of 134mph.
With suspension that is 25 per cent stiffer than the standard car, the FR isn't the most comfortable of long-distance cruisers, but it's great fun on a twisty road. The SEAT responds to changes in direction with vigour, and although it's not up to the standards of a MINI Cooper S or Renaultsport Clio 182, it's an impressive hot hatch. At £13,515, the FR undercuts many of its rivals, but the best is yet to come. While there is a diesel version of the FR, SEAT is saving the Cupra badge for a hot 160bhp 1.9-litre TDI model which will join the range this summer. We can't wait...
