Value for money has been every Daewoo's key selling point since the marque hit the UK in 1995. Under the charge of GM, however, things have changed. The firm's latest offering, the Lacetti, attempts to bring more to the family hatch market than Daewoo's famed three-year free servicing and warranty package.

For a start, the Lacetti bears a marked similarity to its GM sibling, the new Vauxhall Astra, especially in profile, where its sporty stance is obvious. Fashionable clear-lens headlights and a new Daewoo grille also look good.

The 16v 1.6-litre engine gives a decent turn of speed without the Lacetti ever feeling fast, as seen in the 0-60mph time of 10.7 seconds. A 1.4 and, later this year, a flagship 1.8 complete the line-up. Inside, the Daewoo isn't quite as impressive. While the driving position offers plenty of adjustment, and the silver dash trim is stylish enough, the plastics aren't as good as those found in European rivals. There is plenty of interior space, though, and two six-footers can sit in tandem without complaint from either front or back occupant. Even with the seats in place, there's a large, usable boot, but the fixed rear bench base gives an uneven load floor when folded. Yet despite the high standard spec, the best-looking Daewoo to date lacks the image of its competitors - and there's no diesel either. With rivals now offering similar or better buying deals, the Lacetti has lost a unique selling point.

FIRST OPINION

It's a decent offering, but the Lacetti's real weakness is its image - or lack of it. Although a big improvement on its predecessors, the competitive aftersales package won't be enough to tempt purchasers on its own.
