Celebrities and Audi A8s go hand-in-hand. Attend an awards 'do' or a film premiere, and you won't be able to move for the German giant's chauffeur-driven limos.

But only the best will do. At ΂£75,775, the A8L 6.0 is the most expensive Audi ever - and features the company's first 12-cylinder production engine.

Externally, the model is identifiable by a revised nose and discreet W12 badging, while inside it's standard A8, save for the grille outline being echoed in the steering wheel centre. Standard kit includes automatically closing doors, adaptive xenon headlights and a top-notch Bose surround-sound stereo.

Rear legroom is vast, while the plush seats are comfortable. Yet the 448bhp long-wheelbase car is only 8kg heavier than the standard A8, and can reach 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds with the help of the six-speed automatic box. The A8 handles well, and the level ride is spoiled only by harshness over big bumps.

Despite a list of options that could take the price tag to ΂£100,000 or more, the 6.0-litre A8L is desirable enough to make you wish you were famous...

FIRST OPINION

The most expensive Audi ever produced will never be a top-seller... but that's not the point. As a technological showcase it's hard to fault, and the sheer pace offered by the A8L is remarkable. The model is cheaper than rivals, and with such a comparatively light weight, it produces amazing economy, too.
