Although in-car entertainment has come a long way since the invention of the eight track, subsequent developments have yet to offer a perfect solution. Tapes wear out, while CDs are easily scratched.

However, advances in technology mean we may have found the ultimate solution - and, unsurprisingly, forward-thinking Smart is leading the way. This limited-edition ForTwo i-Move makes the most of the latest digital music player, the Apple iPod, to provide the tunes.

Based on a Cabrio Passion, and fitted with a special iPod engraved with the Smart logo, the i-Move's audio system allows drivers to connect their iPod to a computer and download music from the Internet, then listen to it on the move.

It would all work very well were it not for the positioning of the unit - as it's so close to the gearstick, selecting and playing songs can only be done safely when stationary. Thankfully, Smart has also fitted 16-inch Brabus alloy wheels, heated leather seats and white interior trim to match the bodywork. Buyers get an upgraded sound system, too, so they can enjoy their iPod to the full. None of this comes cheap, though. The new Smart costs ΂£12,500 - ΂£2,435 more than the standard Cabrio. However, when you take into account the ΂£1,455 worth of extras, the i-Move begins to look better value for money.

FIRST OPINION

If you must have the latest gadgets, the i-Move should be right up your street. It combines the ForTwo's funky design with the iPod's chic - it's just a pity the player is positioned so awkwardly.
