The newcomer is spacious and fun - so the Colt has become rival to the excellent Honda Jazz in terms of all-round competence. Our initial drive was in the flagship 1.5 Sport, and now we've tried the entry-level model, we're even more impressed. With a three-cylinder 1.1-litre engine, the car comes in Classic guise at £8,999 or better-specified Equippe trim for £9,999. While the latter car is more expensive than some 1.4 rivals, it shouldn't be dismissed.
The smaller unit is a real joy - free-revving and sounding sporty. It's not refined, but for flexibility and character, this 74bhp engine has far more verve than the performance figures suggest. With sharper steering and more evenly balanced handling, this Colt feels lighter than the 1.5. Throw in the superb cabin layout, huge boot and flexible seating arrangement, and the 1.1 Equippe is a very attractive proposition indeed.
