The newcomer stands out thanks to its 20-inch alloys, chrome exhausts and mesh grilles, which are included in the £58,000 price. Also standard are xenon headlamps, high-quality leather trim and adjustable air-suspension.
However, the 4.8iS isn't only about show. The driving position is excellent, while firing up the engine lets you know that although this is a luxury off-roader, underneath lurks the heart of a sports car. Slip the automatic gearlever into Sport mode and the X5 surges forward, accompanied by a wolf-like howl from the tailpipes. The pace is startling, but power isn't the iS's only trump card. It handles as well as you would expect a BMW to, with little indication from the driver's seat that you're driving a car that is nearly as big as a Range Rover. The only downside of the experience is the ride, which is bumpy thanks to the huge alloys. In all other respects, the 4.8iS is worthy of its place in the premier league of SUVs...
