Value for money has always been Kia's main selling point, but the Korean manufacturer wants to be known for much more than producing budget vehicles.

The new Cerato marks a first step in improving its model line-up, and aims to strengthen the brand's appeal with better styling and performance. We got behind the wheel of the first UK car to see how successful the move has been.

For only ΂£10,500, the mid-spec LX is packed with kit pricier rivals lack - yet the Cerato also makes a good case for itself from behind the wheel. It has secure handling, steering that's direct, if lacking in feel, and a composed ride even on the UK's poorly surfaced roads. The only letdown is the 104bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine, which is a bit unrefined. Thankfully, an all-new 101bhp 1.5-litre diesel will join the line-up in November.

But the Cerato faces one problem: the Ford Focus Edge. The run-out model is better to drive and almost as well equipped. At ΂£9,995, it's cheaper, too.

FIRST OPINION

The Cerato is not only good value, it's a big leap forward for Kia in terms of quality and driving dynamics. But it still lags behind the standard set by its main rivals.
